Her daughter sent just three words: “Buy red apples.” Twenty minutes later Martha found her handcuffed to a table… But the real shock was still waiting ahead. 😨😳😱
“If you ever raise a hand against my daughter again, I will make sure you never live in peace again.”
These were the very first words Martha said as she stepped through the door. Her voice was calm, but it carried such certainty that even the tall man standing before her fell silent for a moment.
Just a few hours earlier, she hadn’t had the slightest idea that this day would change the whole family’s life.
Martha had served in law enforcement for more than twenty-five years. Over those years she had seen a great deal: frightened women, children afraid of their own homes, and men skilled at playing the caring husband in front of the neighbors. She had long since learned to spot a lie before a person even finished the sentence.
So when a short message from her daughter Emma arrived on her phone — “Buy red apples” — something inside Martha turned to ice.
Those words were their secret code, one they’d invented years earlier. It meant only one thing: “Come immediately. Don’t ask questions.”
She immediately called her old friend Daniel, who still worked in the police.
“Don’t ask why,” Martha said quickly. “Just come with me.”
“Is it that serious?”
“If Emma wrote exactly those words, then there’s almost no time left.”
Twenty minutes later their car pulled up outside a large house.
The door was opened by Emma’s husband — Adrian. He looked flustered, but was trying too hard to fake surprise.
“What’s going on? Why are you here?”
Martha silently pushed past him with her shoulder and stepped inside.
A quiet sob came from the living room.
Emma was sitting on the floor by the heavy oak table. Her hands were cuffed to the massive furniture leg. Fresh bruises darkened her face, her lip was split, and her tear-filled eyes stared off into empty space.
“My God…” Daniel whispered quietly.
Martha was already pulling out the handcuff key she’d carried with her ever since retiring from the force.
“Who did this?”
Emma only lowered her head.
Adrian stepped forward quickly.
“This isn’t what you think! While I was away, burglars broke in here. They demanded money, beat Emma, and then handcuffed her to the table for some reason. I got home just a few minutes ago and was about to call the police.”
Daniel looked at the man closely.
“Then why didn’t you call an ambulance?”
“I… I just panicked.”
The police searched the house but found almost no signs of a break-in.
When the investigative team arrived, Emma was asked several times whether she recognized the attackers and whether she suspected her husband.
She stayed silent for a long time, then said, barely audibly:
“No… They were strangers.”
Later, when she was alone with her mother, Martha carefully took her daughter’s hand.
“Tell me the truth.”
Emma covered her face with her hands and cried.
“We had a fight… over money I’d been saving for years. I found the account almost empty. Adrian said he’d invested it in something, but I didn’t believe him. After that he lost control…”
Martha silently watched her daughter. She knew stories like this far too well, and understood that Emma was still holding something back. The most terrifying part wasn’t the stolen money, or even the beating. From the look in her daughter’s eyes, Martha understood that the real reason for this cruelty was far more frightening… and for now Emma was too afraid to say it out loud.
Martha, deciding to get to the bottom of everything herself, takes on the case. Even though she has been retired for nine years due to her age, she hasn’t lost her skills as an experienced investigator. After a thorough investigation, and applying a little pressure on both her daughter and Adrian, she finally uncovers the truth. But that truth turns out to be so shocking that no one saw it coming. 😨

Martha didn’t believe a single word Adrian said. She went back over every detail again and again, until she finally got Emma to tell her the whole story.
It turned out that a few months earlier, Adrian had secretly developed a gambling addiction. First he lost his own savings, then he took out loans, and as the debts grew, he began quietly withdrawing money from the family account where Emma had been saving for the future for years. Within a few weeks he had lost almost everything.
But that wasn’t enough for him. To get even more money, Adrian decided to mortgage the house. When Emma found out, she quickly re-registered her share of the property so her husband could no longer make decisions about it without her consent.
When Adrian realized he’d lost access to the house and the money, he flew into a rage. He brutally beat Emma, put handcuffs on her, and chained her to the heavy table so she couldn’t stop him from taking out new loans, then invented the story about burglars.
The evidence Martha gathered turned out to be enough. Adrian was arrested right in the courtroom, and Emma finally understood that silence never saves those who become victims of domestic violence.
