After Sarah and Daniel’s divorce, their fourteen-year-old son Caleb found himself between two homes. One week he lived with his father, the next with his mother. The parents tried not to show their dislike for each other, but Caleb had long noticed that his father had started behaving strangely. He often asked questions about Sarah’s house and was interested in when she was alone.
That night Sarah was fast asleep when the phone suddenly rang. Her son’s name appeared on the screen. She immediately realized that something had happened.
— Mom, just don’t turn on the lights, — Caleb whispered. — Please hide and don’t tell anyone that I called you.
— Caleb, what’s happening? Where are you now? — Sarah sat up sharply in bed.
— I’m at Dad’s. I can’t explain everything, but you need to do what I said.
— You’re scaring me. Did something happen?
For several seconds, there was silence on the line.
— He’s going to come to you. And, Mom, whatever you see, don’t come out of the closet until you’re sure he’s gone.
Sarah didn’t argue. She took her phone and hid in the bedroom closet. Her heart was pounding wildly as she watched through a small gap between the doors.
About twenty minutes later, the front door quietly opened.
Daniel entered the house as if he knew exactly where everything was. In one hand he held a small flashlight, and in the other — a folder with documents. He didn’t turn on the lights and spent several minutes looking around the room, after which he approached the wall near the baseboard.
Sarah froze and tried not to breathe too loudly, covering her mouth with her hands.
Daniel took an unknown object from his pocket, crouched down, and hid something beneath the baseboard. Then he quickly stood up, looked around the bedroom, and left the house.
Sarah didn’t move for several more minutes. Only when she saw through the cameras on her phone that Daniel’s car had driven away did the woman finally come out of the closet.
She still couldn’t understand what had just happened. Then she took a deep breath, walked over to the wall, and carefully removed the baseboard.
