When Lina Morris took a job at a small animal shelter, many didn’t understand her choice. The work was hard, it paid almost nothing, and every day she had to rescue creatures who had already been betrayed once before. But Lina herself said she’d rather spend her days with those who couldn’t lie than among people who only smiled when it benefited them.
More than anyone else, she cared for a huge Cane Corso named Nero. Six months earlier, the dog had nearly died after underground dog fights. Back then it was Lina who sat by him around the clock, feeding him from her hand. But one morning everything changed. The shelter door burst open with a crash, and several police officers quickly stepped inside.
“Lina Morris?” the senior officer asked loudly.
“Yes… What happened?”
The man pulled out documents and said coldly:
“You’re under arrest on charges of animal cruelty and illegal possession of a dangerous dog.”
Lina looked at him, bewildered.

“You’ll get an explanation later. Cuff her.”
Two officers entered the shelter before he’d even finished speaking. They headed straight for Nero and began opening the enclosure door. At the same moment, the cold metal of handcuffs closed around Lina’s wrists.
“No, stop! You can’t touch Nero right now. He’ll be scared!”
But she was already being led outside. Two officers tried to force the huge dog out of his enclosure. Nero growled louder and louder, planted his paws, and wouldn’t let anyone near him.
“Pull him out!” one of the officers shouted irritably.
The leash snapped taut. The next instant, a loud crack rang out. The clasp gave way. Nero broke free. The huge dog shot straight at the officer who had roughly grabbed Lina moments before. The policeman went pale, stepped back, and instinctively reached for his weapon.
“No! Don’t!” Lina screamed.
Despite the handcuffs, she threw herself forward and shielded the officer with her own body.
“Nero… Look at me. It’s me. Easy… Good boy… It’s alright…”
The dog stopped just centimeters from her. His heavy breathing could be heard by everyone around. Just a moment before, he’d been ready to tear apart anyone who came near, but now he slowly lowered his head and whimpered softly. At that very moment, a black SUV screeched to a stop at the gate. The door opened. A tall man in an expensive dark suit stepped out of the car, followed by several silent bodyguards.
Nero instantly raised his head. His gaze changed so sharply that everyone around froze involuntarily, trying to understand who the dog had just seen and who would become his next victim. But unexpectedly, Nero left the girl and, walking calmly and wagging his tail in a friendly way, approached the stranger.
Everyone was in shock at how this enormous dog had completely changed his behavior in an instant. But when the man introduced himself and those present learned the truth, their astonishment grew even greater. That day changed not only the dog’s fate, but also decided the girl’s future. 😱

The tall man calmly walked up to Nero and stroked his head. The huge dog, who just a minute earlier had been ready to lunge at people, sat obediently beside him.
“My name is Daniel Black,” the man said calmly, stroking the dog’s head with evident pleasure. “Nero belongs to me.”
The police officers exchanged glances.
“If that’s true, then why was the dog at this shelter?” the senior officer asked.
“Six months ago, Nero was stolen. He was used in underground dog fights. When the police shut the criminals down, Lina volunteered to take care of him while my lawyers and investigators looked for those responsible. She didn’t just save his life — she restored his trust in people.”
The officer frowned.
“But we have a complaint about animal cruelty.”
Daniel held out a folder.
“And I have the results of an independent investigation, camera footage, and a confession from a former shelter employee. He’s the one who faked the photographs, sent in the false report, and wanted to get rid of Lina to cover up selling animals through front buyers.”
A few minutes later, the suspect was detained right on the shelter grounds.
Lina’s handcuffs were removed.
“I’m sorry… We made a mistake,” the officer said quietly.
Lina only smiled and sank to her knees. Nero immediately pressed against her, as if afraid of losing again the person who had once saved him.
