Sophia always tried not to argue with Isabella. After the death of their parents, their father married for a second time, and Isabella became Sophia’s stepsister. From the very beginning she knew how to win over adults, while Sophia was often called too sensitive and quiet. Even when Isabella took her things or made cutting remarks, Sophia preferred to stay silent.
On the wedding day, Sophia stood in front of the mirror in a room of an old country house. A dress lay on the bed, and next to it was a pearl corset that, according to Isabella, had been kept in the family for many years.
— It’s a little tight, but it’s supposed to fit like that, — said Isabella, adjusting the laces. — Grandmother wore it at her wedding.
— Are you sure it will fit me? It looks very old.
— Are you sure it will fit me? It looks very old.
Isabella smiled and smoothed the pearl fabric.
— You always find something to be afraid of. Be patient for a little while, and you’ll look beautiful.
Sophia wanted to ask the maid to help her, but Isabella insisted that she would manage on her own. She tightened the laces slowly, checking again and again whether the corset lay evenly. Outside the door, guests were laughing and clinking glasses. Mark, Sophia’s groom, was due to come in soon, and she didn’t want to delay the ceremony.
— Ready? One last pull left, — said Isabella.
— Please, not so tight. It’s hard for me to breathe.
Isabella did not answer. She pulled sharply on the laces, and a metallic crack came from inside the corset. Sophia cried out and fell to the floor. Pain shot through her back, and her legs felt as if they no longer belonged to her.
— Isabella, I can’t feel my legs. Call someone, I beg you! And take this corset off me!
Her sister looked down at her. For a moment her face turned cold. She grabbed the ribbon of the corset and kept pulling, but then the door burst open and Mark ran into the room.
— What happened?
Isabella immediately let go of the ribbon, knelt down beside Sophia and pretended that it had all happened by accident. She said she had pulled only very lightly.
— The corset broke! I don’t understand how this could have happened!
Sophia lost consciousness before she could say or do anything.
She spent a week in the hospital unconscious. When Sophia finally opened her eyes, only her fiancé Mark was beside her. At first she didn’t understand what had happened, but soon she remembered everything. She tried to explain to Mark what had happened and to tell the truth, but he didn’t believe her. When Sophia began to insist, they went to the police, but they didn’t believe her there either.

Sophia asked Mark to give her his phone and called her childhood friend Laura. Laura had long known what Isabella was like when alone with Sophia. Although Laura worked as a lawyer in another city, she came right away to help.
— Don’t accuse her with words alone. We need evidence, — said Laura.
Together they asked the police to examine the corset again. Laura insisted that they find the seamstress who had prepared it for the wedding. The seamstress was flustered at first, and then admitted: the day before the ceremony Isabella had brought in the corset and asked her to replace one bone. When the seamstress refused, Isabella took the item back, saying she would manage on her own.
The police questioned Isabella again and checked the footage from the camera at the service entrance. The video showed her carrying the corset alone into her father’s workshop, and some time later coming out of it with it.
When Isabella was shown the recording, she stopped pretending to be frightened.
— I wanted the wedding to fall through, — she finally said. — I didn’t think it would end like this.
But the worst came when it turned out that she had lied about the family heirloom too: the corset had not belonged to the grandmother, but had been bought shortly before the wedding.
Mark asked Sophia to forgive him for not believing her right away. She did not answer. Isabella was charged with a crime, and Sophia began a long rehabilitation.
On the day she was discharged, Laura helped her take her first steps. Sophia no longer stayed silent — and no longer allowed others to decide for her whom to believe.
