Maya didn’t want to go to the family gathering. Ever since her daughter Lily was born, her husband’s relatives had constantly been explaining to her how to care for a baby properly. But Leo promised they would only stop by his parents’ for a short while, congratulate his father and go straight home.
Guests had already gathered in the yard. By the garage stood a brand-new Mercedes belonging to Leo’s sister, Isabel, and a little farther off Maya had left the stroller with four-month-old Lily. The road led downhill from the garage, but the spot seemed safe: the stroller’s brake was on, and the baby was sleeping peacefully.
— Are you sure she isn’t cold? — Isabel asked, glancing at the stroller.
— I’m sure. I covered her normally, — Maya answered.
Isabel winced and pointed at the car:
— I need to pull out. Move the stroller, please.
Maya was already heading toward her daughter, but her mother-in-law called her from the house and asked her to help with a tray. It took only a few seconds. Isabel reached the stroller first.
— You’re so slow. I’ll move it myself, — she said.
— Don’t! Wait, I’m coming! — Maya shouted.
Instead of taking hold of the handle, Isabel pushed the stroller from the side. It moved, the wheels quickly rolled down the sloping road, and Maya rushed after it. The stroller tipped over at the edge of the driveway and fell onto the asphalt with a dull thud.
— Lily! — Maya screamed, dropping to her knees beside her daughter.
Leo didn’t run over right away. Isabel was looking at her car door and irritably repeating that a scratch had appeared on the body.
— Why did you leave her on a slope? — Leo asked sharply.
— She was on the brake! Isabel pushed the stroller, — Maya said.
— I just wanted to clear the way, — Isabel brushed it off. — Don’t make me out to be a monster.
She picked Lily up, and together with Leo they hurried to the hospital. There a doctor took the girl away for examination and asked Maya to wait. Leo sat beside her but didn’t take her hand.
— Don’t make everything worse with accusations, — he said quietly. — It’s hard enough for the family already.
— The family? Our daughter’s life may be in danger, and you’re defending the person who caused it all!
— And where were you at that moment? Weren’t you the one who was supposed to watch our daughter?
— I had to turn away because of your mother. And I warned your sister not to touch the stroller, — Maya answered sharply.

She advised her not to start a public squabble, but to hand the recording and the medical documents to a lawyer.
