“If you want to eat next week, wash my feet first,” Sandra said coldly, leaning back on the couch and placing a basin of hot water in front of her.
Laughter filled the room. Someone turned away to hide a smile, while a teenager was already holding up their phone to film it all. No one even thought about stopping what was happening.
Evelyn slowly moved her gaze across her relatives’ faces. Just a few years ago they had greeted her with respect, asked for her advice, and called her the heart of the family. Now almost everyone looked at her as if she really had stopped understanding what was going on.

After her husband’s death, Evelyn had come to live with her son Daniel and his wife Sandra. At first the daughter-in-law was attentive and caring, but gradually her behavior changed. She started speaking for her mother-in-law in front of guests, interrupting her, hiding letters from old friends, controlling her medication, and constantly repeating the same phrase to everyone around:

Over time, the deed to the house ended up in Sandra’s hands too. She assured the relatives that the elderly woman was no longer capable of making serious decisions, and that the family should handle everything instead. No one asked any further questions.
That day Evelyn came back from the cemetery. She had sat by her husband’s grave for a long time, and for the first time in many months she felt as if she’d made a decision inside herself. When she stepped through the front door, Sandra was already waiting for her.
“Since you’re here, don’t just stand around. Bring the basin of hot water.”
Evelyn silently did as she was told.
Sandra took off her shoes, stretched out her legs, and said mockingly:
“Today you’ll show everyone you can still be useful. If you refuse, you’ll go a week without food. Let’s see how fast your stubbornness disappears.”

Evelyn showed the letters Sandra had hidden from her, pharmacy receipts confirming her medication had been switched, and recordings of conversations where the daughter-in-law admitted to a friend that she wanted to get the house transferred into her name as fast as possible. The final piece of evidence was the video from her grandson’s phone, which he himself had filmed of his grandmother’s humiliation.
“Thank you for recording the whole thing,” Evelyn said calmly. “Now that’s evidence too.”
Daniel turned pale.
“Sandra… Is this not true? Say something…”
But she stayed silent.
“This morning I signed the documents,” Evelyn continued. “The house won’t go to any of you. After I die, it will be sold, and all the money will go to a fund that helps elderly people who become victims of their own families.”
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Evelyn stood up, looked at her son, and said quietly:
“A house can be lost and regained. But a mother only loses her son’s respect once.”
