When Sofia married Daniel, she thought she had found a man with whom she could build a calm and happy life. Daniel assured her that family meant everything to him, and his mother Helen promised she would never interfere in their relationship. But after a few years, those promises turned into empty words.
Helen increasingly showed up at their home unannounced, ordered people around the kitchen like she owned it, and constantly repeated that a real wife should think only of her husband, not her job. Sofia tolerated these remarks out of love for her husband.
That day she had spent almost fourteen hours at work. She felt deeply exhausted, and all day she thought only of the dinner waiting for her at home, which she had prepared that morning. When she opened the door, Sofia immediately sensed a strange silence.
In the kitchen, Helen was calmly sitting at the table, drinking tea.
“Finally showed up,” she said coldly. “I was starting to think you weren’t planning on coming home at all.”
Sofia set down her bag and opened the refrigerator.
“Where’s my dinner?”
Her mother-in-law didn’t even glance her way.
“I threw it out.”
Sofia slowly closed the refrigerator door.
“What do you mean, you threw it out?”
Helen shrugged.
“Food has its time. Decent women come home on time, not wander around until night. You didn’t deserve that dinner anyway.”
For a few seconds Sofia was silent, trying to believe what she’d just heard.
“Are you serious right now?”
“Absolutely. Maybe you’ll finally understand what place a wife should occupy.”
Sofia turned sharply toward her. After fourteen hours of work, exhausted by hunger and fatigue, she couldn’t tolerate this treatment any longer.
“Then pack your things and get out of my house. Right now.”
At that moment Daniel walked into the kitchen. Hearing her last words, he immediately stood beside his mother.
“You have no right to speak to her that way.”
Sofia looked first at her husband, then at her mother-in-law.
“She threw out my dinner and insulted me in my own home. And she keeps interfering in our life and demanding that I become your housewife. But somehow she never demands that you become a real husband and start earning money instead of dumping all the financial problems on me.”
But Daniel didn’t even flinch.
“If anyone should leave, it’s you. No one in this house dares speak to my mother in that tone. Either apologize to her, or tomorrow we start the divorce, and you’ll have to pack all your things and go.”
Sofia looked into his eyes for a long time, as if seeing for the first time the man she had once married.
“Fine,” she answered quietly. “Tomorrow it is, then.”
But the next morning turned out to be so shocking that she couldn’t believe her eyes. Her husband and mother-in-law were gone from the house, along with all her gold and the money they had spent years saving for their future children.

The phone rang while Sofia was still trying to understand where her husband and mother-in-law had disappeared to.
“Is this Sofia? This is a police investigator calling. We’re very sorry, but your husband Daniel and his mother Helen died last night in a car accident.”
Sofia’s legs gave out beneath her.
“What?.. That can’t be…”
“A large sum of cash was found in their car, along with gold jewelry and documents confirming these items belong to you. We’re asking you to come in to identify the property.”
A few hours later, at the police station, Sofia learned what finally put together all the pieces of this terrible story. The investigator explained that Daniel had withdrawn money from their joint accounts in advance, gathered all the gold, and was planning to flee abroad with his mother right after the divorce. That was exactly why, the night before, he had so confidently demanded that Sofia leave her own home. They were certain that by morning she would be left with nothing.
But fate decided otherwise. On the way to the airport, their car lost control at high speed and crashed into a road barrier. Neither of them survived.
All the money, jewelry, and documents were returned to their rightful owner. Leaving the police station, Sofia realized she had lost her husband long before that night. It was only now that the truth had finally come out.
