A few weeks before that day, Maria began noticing irregularities in her husband’s company documents. At first they were small payments that could be explained by ordinary expenses. But the more closely she checked the reports, the more often she came across transfers to the accounts of companies that Alexander’s business officially had no dealings with.
Maria didn’t want to accuse her husband without proof. She gathered documents, cross-checked dates and amounts, and then tried several times to talk to Alexander at home. Every time, he answered the same way:
“That’s not your job, Maria. Stay out of the company’s business.”
“I’m not trying to interfere. I want to understand where the money is going.”
“I said everything’s under control.”
After that, Alexander stopped discussing work with her. But Maria already understood that something serious was going on. So one morning she took a folder of documents and drove straight to the company’s board meeting.
When the conference room doors opened, several directors looked at her in surprise. Alexander was sitting at the head of the table next to the finance department and his trusted vice-president, Renata. Seeing Maria with the folder, his expression changed instantly.
“What are you doing here?”
“I need to talk to you. These documents concern the company’s financial operations.”
Maria set the folder on the table and opened it.
“There are transfers here that don’t follow the usual corporate procedures. I think you should look at them.”
Alexander didn’t even touch the documents.
“Still haven’t figured out your place, have you? I told you: don’t interfere. This doesn’t concern you.”
“I’ve been trying this whole time to tell you I found a serious problem. Why won’t you listen to me?”
“Enough!”
His voice rang out through the whole room. Several directors lowered their eyes, but no one intervened.
Alexander turned to Renata.
“Get her out of here.”
“Alexander, I’ll leave on my own if you just let me show you the documents. This is very important!”
“I have nothing more to explain to you.”
Renata walked up to Maria and grabbed her arm.
“Let’s go.”
“Don’t touch me!”
But Alexander said coldly:
“Do as I said.”
The next second, Maria was on the floor. Renata hit her several times, and Alexander didn’t even try to stop what was happening.
“From now on, you’ll know your place,” he said. “Don’t cause me any more problems, because I won’t put up with it any longer.”
Maria slowly got up. She didn’t cry and didn’t argue. She only looked at her husband, picked up the folder, took off her wedding ring, and, with a cold look, threw it down in front of him.
“See you,” she said as she left.
The next day, chaos erupted at the company from the very morning. Banks suspended the company’s operations. Then suppliers began freezing contracts, and a foreign partner canceled a scheduled technical audit.

The financial director closed the office door and laid several documents in front of Alexander.

Alexander went pale.
“What are you talking about?”
“A few months ago, the company’s documents were changed. Shares, financial agreements, and part of the contracts were rewritten in her name. And along with them, the electronic key for authorizing transactions was registered to her as well.”
Now Alexander understood why Maria had tried so persistently to talk to him.
She had started receiving notifications about transfers she hadn’t made. She checked the documents and discovered financial fraud amounting to millions. Maria wanted to get to the bottom of it all before the banks or the police discovered the violations.
But after what had happened at the office, she was no longer going to protect her husband.
That same day, Maria went to the police herself and reported that someone had gained access to her electronic signature and used her name to carry out illegal transactions.
An investigation was opened.
That was exactly why the banks had suspended transactions, the suppliers had frozen contracts, and the company’s international deals had ended up blocked.
