Laura had been teaching at an elementary school for several years and knew her students well. She was used to their noise, funny drawings, and the stories they made up on the spot. But that day, an ordinary drawing lesson suddenly turned into a situation she wouldn’t be able to forget for a long time.
To distract the children a bit from their usual tasks, Laura handed out blank sheets of paper and said:
“Today I want each of you to draw the most unusual adult you’ve ever met. It could be a relative, a neighbor, or just someone you see often.”
The children immediately started drawing. Someone drew their father, someone their grandmother, and a few students decided to draw their coaches.
Twenty minutes later, Laura started collecting the drawings. At first she smiled as she looked through the children’s work, but after the sixth sheet, her smile disappeared.
The drawing showed an elderly man in a green hat. He had a gray beard and a deep scar running along his left cheek. Laura looked at the next drawing. It was the same man. She picked up the third sheet. Him again.
“Wait, guys,” Laura said. “Who is this man? Why did you all draw the same person?”
“He always meets me at the crosswalk,” answered Chloe. “I just drew the funniest grandpa I see every day.”
“Me too!” shouted another boy.
“Me too!” several other children answered right away.
Laura fell silent.
She quickly counted the drawings. Six out of fifteen children had drawn the same man. After class, Laura decided to walk the children to the crossing near the school herself. She wanted to make sure the children really did meet this man often. When they approached the road, Chloe suddenly stopped.
“Look! There he is!”
An elderly man in a green hat was standing at the crossing. Laura felt something tighten inside her. The man smiled at the children.
“Chloe, you’re leaving late today.”
The girl smiled back at him.
“Yes, Mr. Henry.”
Laura looked at Ethan.
“Ethan, don’t forget to look both ways before crossing.”
The boy nodded.
Then Henry called out Ava, Lucas, and a few other children by name.
He really did know all of them. Laura didn’t say anything to him. She waited until the children went their separate ways, and immediately went back to the school.
In Principal Robert’s office, she placed six drawings on the desk.
“Robert, we need to call the police.”
The principal looked closely at the images.
“Do you think he could be dangerous?”
“I don’t know,” Laura answered. “But I do know that a stranger meets the children by the road every day, remembers their names, and knows their habits.”
Robert was silent for a few seconds, then picked up the phone.
A few hours later, police officers were already at the school. They decided to wait for Henry and check his documents.
When the man appeared at the crossing again, several officers got out of their cars.
“Police! Don’t move!”
Henry slowly raised his hands. But instead of fear, a strange, calm smile appeared on his face. He didn’t resist and said nothing. The man calmly answered the police officers’ questions and obediently did everything they told him.

After the questioning, the police learned that Henry was not a kidnapper and never intended to harm the children. On the contrary, the reason he came to the school every day turned out to be connected to a tragedy that had happened many years ago.
Once, his little son had studied at this very school. Every day after class, the boy crossed the road near the school, but back then there was no traffic light, and children had to wait for the right moment on their own.
One day the boy stayed late after class, then ran out to the crossing. The driver of a car didn’t manage to brake in time. Henry’s son died right there by the school.
Since then, Henry couldn’t forget that day.
He started coming to the school to help children cross the road. He memorized their names because he wanted to know who was heading home, and he never let children cross the road alone.
“I understand why you were scared,” Henry said quietly to the police. “But after my son’s death, I simply couldn’t watch children cross that road unprotected every day.”
When Robert learned the truth, he was shocked. The principal looked through old records and found that after the tragedy, parents had already been asking for years to have a traffic light installed, but the matter kept getting postponed.
The next day, Robert personally contacted the city administration. A few weeks later, a real traffic light and additional safety signs were installed near the school. Laura noticed that after that, Henry no longer appeared at the crossing.
One day she asked Robert:
“Do you know where he disappeared to?”
The principal shook his head.
“No. I think he finally realized that the children no longer need his help.”
Laura looked at the new traffic light, then at the empty crossing. And only then did she understand that all these years, the children had been afraid of a man who hadn’t come there for them. He had come there because of one child he had once been unable to protect.
