Marco Valenti had spent years running his life so that no one could ever get close to him. His house stood on a slope above the sea, behind high gates and guards. Even the people in his inner circle didn’t know all of the building’s hidden passages. The most restricted place of all was an old underground spring, inherited from his grandfather. Only he and two trusted guards had access to it.
That night, Marco went downstairs after a difficult meeting. He wanted to be alone, to wash off the smell of cigars and expensive liquor. But when he opened the heavy door, he stopped short. A girl was lying in the water.
Her wet dark hair was plastered to her face, bruises showed on her neck, and there were fresh scrapes on her arms. She was breathing, but unconscious.
“Who let her in here?” Marco asked coldly.
The guard Lucas turned pale.
“No one, sir. The cameras showed no movement. All the entrances are locked.”
Marco slowly stepped closer. The girl looked no older than twenty-five. She wore a simple, light garment, stained with mud and blood, as if she had run through a forest or crawled out of the earth.
“The restricted spring is guarded better than a bank vault,” Marco said. “Don’t tell me she just appeared here out of thin air.”
“We’ll check everything,” Lucas answered quickly.
“Check every inch. Find whoever let this happen, and find out who she even is.”
Marco sat down beside her and carefully studied her face. It seemed familiar to him, but he couldn’t place why. After a while, he gave an order.
“Call a doctor. Now. And don’t tell anyone about the girl.”
Twenty minutes later, a doctor was examining the stranger in a guest room. Marco stood by the window while the doctor checked her wounds.
“How bad is it?” he asked quietly.
“She’ll live,” the doctor answered calmly. “But she needs rest. And, Mr. Marco… she’s afraid even while unconscious. There’s a strong sense of anxiety.”
The girl clenched her fingers so tightly it was as if she were defending herself against someone all over again. At that moment, she suddenly opened her eyes.
She looked straight at Marco and whispered something that made him and everyone else in the room freeze. And when the girl fully came to and revealed the truth about herself, absolutely everyone was shocked by what they heard. 😨

“Don’t trust Eric,” the girl whispered, looking at Marco.
The room went silent. Eric was one of Marco’s most trusted men and had been in charge of the house’s security for years.
The girl introduced herself as Sofia. She turned out to be Eric’s younger sister. A few days earlier, Sofia had accidentally overheard her brother’s conversation with strangers. Eric was planning to betray Marco and hand his enemies information about his routes and security.
“I tried to stop him,” she said, in tears. “But he hit me, locked me in the old part of the house, and told me to keep quiet.”
That night, Sofia managed to get out. She wandered through the dark corridors for a long time, not knowing where to go. When she saw the spring, she wanted to wash her face, but pain and weakness made her lose consciousness.
Marco listened to her in silence, then turned to Lucas.
“Check Eric’s phone, his accounts, and the camera footage from the past few days.”
An hour later, everything was confirmed. Eric had tried to disappear from the house, but security stopped him at the gates. He realized his sister had told the truth and stopped denying his betrayal.
Marco walked over to Sofia.
“You saved my life, even though you knew what you were risking,” he said quietly. “No one will ever touch you here again.”
