She came only to see a dying man off on his final journey, but a week later she uncovered a secret that shocked everyone š³š±š¤Æ
Claire was once considered one of the best nurses in the city. She never turned a blind eye to doctors’ mistakes and always told patients the truth, even when nobody liked hearing it. That was exactly why she lost her job. After her husband’s death, her life began to fall apart, one problem after another. Debts grew, savings ran out, and an eviction notice already sat on the kitchen table. When she was offered three months caring for the most dangerous man in the city, for a sum that could completely change her life, she had almost no choice.
That man’s name was Damian Black. For years, his name alone inspired fear. The newspapers called him a crime king, the police had tried unsuccessfully to put him behind bars, and the doctors had already delivered their final verdict. They claimed the illness was incurable and he had very little time left.
“You don’t have to save him,” an elderly woman said calmly, meeting Claire at the huge mansion. “Just be there so he doesn’t die alone.”
“If he really is dying, I’ll stay,” Claire answered. “But I never pretend to understand everything in advance.”
The woman only nodded silently and led her to the room.
Damian lay motionless, barely reacting to anything happening around him. His breathing was heavy, his skin looked far too pale, and so much expensive equipment stood by the bed that the room looked more like a private clinic than a bedroom.
That first night, she barely left his bedside. She recorded every symptom, monitored his pulse, temperature, pupil reaction, and breathing. The longer Claire watched Damian, the more strongly she felt that what she was seeing didn’t match the medical records at all. Something troubled her deeply, but she herself couldn’t understand how, with so much expensive equipment, the best doctors, and enormous amounts of money, he could have been given such a wrong diagnosis ā one that didn’t match his symptoms at all.
Toward morning, Damian suddenly opened his eyes.
“Do you think I’m going to die soon too?” he whispered, barely audible.
Claire held his gaze.
“No. I think someone very much wants everyone to believe that.”
Heavy silence fell over the room. In that moment, Damian’s expression changed for the first time. Instead of indifference, real surprise flickered in his eyes.
“So⦠you figured it out quickly. But don’t try to do anything. Try to pay it no attention,” he said, barely audible.
Claire said nothing in response, but inside she already understood: if the diagnosis was false, then someone had spent months deceiving not only the doctors, but the entire family of the man the whole city feared.
Her conscience wouldn’t let her close her eyes to it and simply walk away. She decided to get to the bottom of the truth and try to treat him herself, using all her experience.
Within a week, Damian’s breathing had improved somewhat, and he stayed conscious far longer than before. Still, Claire didn’t give up and kept searching for answers.
Noticing her persistence, Damian decided that revealing the truth to her could protect her from harm. But that nighttime conversation between them, and the conclusions they reached, changed their understanding of everything happening forever. And the decision they made soon left everyone around them truly shaken with shock. š³

When Damian finally decided to tell the truth, Claire understood why he had asked her from the very start not to get involved.
“It’s not an illness,” he said quietly. “I’ve been slowly poisoned.”
A few months earlier, Damian had learned that his wife had been cheating on him for years with a man he considered his closest friend. Upon learning this, he filed for divorce, but soon after, his wife died in a car crash. After her death, that very same friend stayed close, feigning loyalty, while in reality gradually taking control of the business, Damian’s inner circle, and even his doctors. Under the guise of treatment, he was given medications every day that slowly destroyed his body, making everyone believe he was terminally ill.
Claire understood right away why his condition had started to improve after she replaced some of the medications and stopped carrying out suspicious prescriptions.
Later, Damian’s grandmother admitted that she had deliberately hired caretaker after caretaker, hoping to find someone who wouldn’t be afraid to question the diagnosis and would finally see the truth.
The evidence Claire gathered helped the police uncover the conspiracy. Damian’s friend ended up behind bars, and a few months later, Damian himself walked out of the mansion a free man for the first time in a long while ā understanding that sometimes one honest person can save a life where everyone else has long since stopped looking for the truth.
