Eliza never forgot the evening she first realized her marriage had long since become nothing more than a convenient front for her husband.
Three years ago, she married Adrian, the owner of a large international company. In the first months, he seemed like a caring, calm man who genuinely valued her. But gradually, work, money, and status changed him for the worse. Eliza had almost stopped appearing beside him at business events, and then she noticed another woman had entered his life.
She didn’t make scenes and didn’t demand anything. What’s more, Eliza kept smiling at family gatherings, because she understood perfectly well: one day she would need the chance to act calmly and without warning.
That evening, Adrian threw a lavish banquet to celebrate closing an important deal. His relatives, partners, and friends sat at long tables. Beside him sat his mistress, Clara, and Adrian didn’t even try to hide their closeness.
“I think it’s finally time everyone learned the truth,” he said loudly, raising his glass. “Eliza has spent far too long pretending to be a woman who belongs by my side.”
The guests fell silent.
“Adrian, stop,” Eliza said quietly.
He smirked.
“Why? You have nothing to lose, after all. You live off my money and use my last name. Did you really think you were part of this family?”
Clara laughed, and several relatives backed her up. Adrian’s mother looked at Eliza with contempt.
“You’d better just leave, dear,” she said.
Eliza slowly set her glass down on the table.
“Do you really want me to leave?”
“That’s exactly what we want,” Adrian answered. “And try to do it with some dignity.”
For a few seconds she looked at him in silence, as if she had finally confirmed something she’d known for a long time.
Then everything happened so fast that no one had time to stop her.
Eliza lunged at Adrian and struck him several sharp blows, forcing him to stagger back. Screams rang out across the hall, someone jumped up from their seat, and her husband’s relatives rushed to intervene.
“Eliza, stop! You’ve lost your mind!” Clara shouted.
Eliza was breathing heavily, but within a few seconds she straightened up and calmly smoothed her dress.
“I promise you’ll all regret this,” she said.
She turned and silently walked out of the hall.

Then Adrian’s mother’s phone rang.
“We were just told the deal has been cancelled. Who did this?”
Adrian went pale.
“That’s not possible. Call the lawyers.”
But soon the main truth came out: even before their wedding, Eliza had invested her own money into Adrian’s company, back when it had been on the verge of bankruptcy.
