She was only a quiet maid whom the knights considered weak and unnoticeable, but that day she shielded a little prince from three armed assassins without hesitation — and what happened next shocked everyone 😱🤯😨

Mira had long been used to being overlooked. At the palace they thought her quiet and weak: she served food, mended clothes and tried not to get in the way of the knights who came back from training covered in bruises and scratches. Once she asked to be taught to wield a sword, but the captain only smirked and told her to get on with the work she was good at.

So when enemies attacked the camp during the hunt, no one thought of entrusting Mira with its defense. Six-year-old Kale, son of King Alaric, vanished in the commotion. He was last seen at the edge of the forest, where the boy had run, frightened by the noise and shouting.

Mira found him behind a fallen tree. Kale was trembling and clutching a small wooden horse to his chest.

— Father told me to wait here, — he whispered.

— Then we’ll take you to him, — Mira answered and held out her hand. — Stay close and don’t let go of me, whatever happens.

She didn’t say that she had neither a sword nor any experience of real fighting. At her belt was only a small knife for household work, which would hardly help against armed enemies.

They were walking toward the camp when a branch cracked ahead. Three men in dark cloaks stepped out from behind the trees. Each had a sword. The one who walked first looked at Kale and smiled without any warmth.

— Hand over the boy and step aside, — he ordered. — Then you’ll stay alive.

Mira stepped back, shielding the child with her body.

— He’s not going anywhere with you.

— You don’t even know how to hold a sword, — the man said. — Have you really decided to die for him?

— I’ve decided not to give him to you.

Kale clutched her cloak. Mira felt his fingers trembling and made herself speak calmly.

— When I say so, run to the camp walls. Don’t look back, Kale. You’ll find your father there.

— And you?

— I’ll be right behind you.

The chief hunter raised his hand, and two of his men stepped forward. Mira understood that she wouldn’t be able to trick them. She ordered Kale to run and threw herself at the killers.

The first blow knocked the knife out of her hand. Mira fell to one knee, heard the boy’s footsteps fading behind her and closed her eyes. She was waiting for the blow, already saying goodbye to life, when the forest around suddenly filled with a low ringing. The killers froze, and their leader turned pale for the first time. What happened next shocked everyone. 😱

The ringing repeated — now closer. Royal guards leaped out from behind the trees. Seeing them, the killers lowered their swords, and their leader tried to rush at Kale, but Mira snatched the knocked-out knife from the ground and blocked his way.

— Enough, — came the voice of King Alaric. He stepped out from behind the guards, with Kale standing beside him. — You swore to serve my family.

The leader turned pale. He was the captain of the royal guard, the very man who had once mocked Mira for wanting to learn to wield a sword.

The captain spoke first:

— I only wanted to frighten you, Your Majesty. These are Lord Edmund’s men, they arranged it all!

But one of the prisoners laughed and threw down a ring bearing the seal of the royal adviser Edmund. After it fell a bundle of letters in which the captain promised to help kidnap the prince in exchange for a place under the new ruler.

Alaric read the letter in silence. Then he ordered both of them to be put in chains. In the camp the story could no longer be hidden: people had heard the captain’s confession and seen the proof of his treachery. By morning everyone was talking about the plot — from soldiers to courtiers.

Kale hugged Mira.

— You said you’d be right behind me.

— I was a little delayed, — she smiled weakly.

The king thanked her and offered her a place among the royal guards. Mira agreed to learn, but asked to begin not with the sword, but with making sure no one was ever made to think of themselves as weak again.

From that night on, no one at the palace called her unnoticeable. The two conspirators lost everything, and Mira gained what she had always lacked: the right to choose for herself who to be.
