After her husband’s death she learned that the house where his secret companion lived belonged to her, and she came to take back her property. But before leaving, the other woman uttered a phrase that shocked everyone π±π€―π¨
Valeria met Mark soon after her grandmother’s death. Her grandmother had left her a substantial inheritance, but the girl was in no hurry to spend the money and trusted her husband to handle the accounts. Mark assured her that he was investing it in reliable projects and building a shared future for them.
β Don’t worry, everything is properly registered, β he would say when Valeria asked about the documents. β When the time comes, we’ll have our own house and a good life.
She believed him. Over the years of marriage Mark really did acquire several properties and invest in a business. Valeria hardly delved into the details: her husband always found a convincing explanation, and she wanted to think that they were acting as one family.
One evening Valeria came back from the pharmacy and saw that the front door was ajar. The house was quiet. She called Mark, but heard no answer. Then she went into the bathroom and froze on the threshold.
Mark was lying on the floor, showing no signs of life. Valeria called an ambulance, then the police, but they could no longer help him.
β Are you sure no one came in here? β the investigator asked, examining the locks.
β I don’t know, β she whispered. β The door was open when I came back.
The police found no signs of a break-in. After the circumstances were checked, Mark’s death was ruled an accident, and Valeria was handed the inheritance documents. Only then did she see how complicated her husband’s affairs were. Her money had been turning into real estate and investments for years, and some of the papers she had never even seen before.
β He bought all this with my money? β Valeria asked the lawyer, Elias.
β Judging by the documents, a lot is registered in your name, β he answered. β But there is one problem. In one of the houses a woman named Renata is currently living.
Valeria recognized the name: Mark had mentioned her as a business partner. The lawyer found out that Renata didn’t just live in the house β Mark supported her and, it seemed, had long considered this property his secret hideaway.
A few days later Valeria came there together with Elias and the movers.
β You can’t just throw me out on the street, β Renata said, looking at the boxes by the door.
β Of course I can. The house belongs to me, β Valeria answered calmly. β I’m free to dispose of it as I please.
Renata turned pale and looked at her as if she had been waiting for exactly this conversation.
β You know what? Mark asked me to tell you something if you ever came here, β she said.
Everyone froze. And what Renata said next shocked everyone.π³

β Mark hid ten kilograms of gold, β Renata said. β He bought it with your money and told no one. Only I know where it lies.
Valeria looked at her with distrust.
β If that’s true, why did you tell me about it? Why don’t you try to find the gold yourself and take it for yourself?
β Because separately we can’t find it. Mark asked me to help you if you yourself wanted to look for the gold. But without me you won’t find the hiding place. And if you throw me out of the house, I won’t help you.
Elias asked Renata to show the documents. She took out of the closet a folder with bank statements and a letter from Mark. They said that the bars were hidden in the house, and that he had told only her the location of the hiding place. But there were other papers too: they showed that for years Mark had been transferring Valeria’s money to accounts she knew nothing about.
β So you knew that he was managing my inheritance, β Valeria said quietly.
β I didn’t find out right away, β Renata answered. β When I understood what was going on, he had already arranged everything. I kept copies so that one day you could learn the truth.
Elias called a notary and asked him to record the documents. Renata agreed to show the hiding place, but only after Valeria promised not to throw her out immediately.
Under an old staircase they found a metal safe. Inside lay gold bars and an envelope with Mark’s confession: he had intended to return the gold to Valeria, but was afraid that she would learn how long he had been deceiving her.
Valeria forgave neither her husband nor Renata. However, the documents helped her regain control of the inheritance, and the gold became the beginning of a new life in which she no longer entrusted her decisions to anyone
