When Laura married Ethan, she believed she was finally starting a new life. During their two years together, he had assured her that his family simply held on to old traditions, and that his mother could just be too strict. The celebration ended late in the evening. Laura was still in her wedding dress when Marlene, her new mother-in-law, walked into the room with a large plastic basket.
“Since you’re now part of our family, it’s time to get used to your duties,” Marlene said calmly, setting the basket down in front of her.

Laura turned to face her husband.
