Claire worked as a nurse and was used to noticing other people’s pain. At home, she tried simply to be a mom: making dinner, checking homework, and trusting that Chloe was safe beside her. Julian, her husband, had long since become a father to the girl, even though Chloe wasn’t his biological daughter. He drove her to school, stayed with her in the evenings while Claire was on shift, and always assured his wife that everything was fine between him and Chloe.
“You’ve barely eaten again,” Claire said one evening at dinner.
Chloe lowered her eyes and pushed her plate away.
“I’m not hungry. Just tired.”
In recent weeks, her daughter had started giving short answers and locking herself in her room more and more often. One day, Claire noticed a bruise on her shoulder.
“What happened?”
“I bumped into something at school. It’s nothing.”
Julian backed up Chloe’s explanation and smiled gently.
“Kids are always bumping into things, but Chloe should be more careful.”
Claire wanted to ask more, but her phone buzzed: the hospital was calling her in for the night shift. Before leaving, she lingered at her daughter’s bedroom door. Chloe lay with her back to her and didn’t answer when she said goodnight.
A few days later, deep in the night, the phone shattered the silence.
“This is the city hospital. Your daughter is with us. Please come right away.”
“What’s wrong with Chloe? Is she conscious?”

Claire arrived without remembering how she’d gotten there. Two police officers stood in the corridor, and the doctor asked her to step into a private room. There, Claire heard words that seemed to make her stop breathing: Chloe had multiple injuries consistent with prolonged physical abuse.

“Julian… Yes, he always helps me, and he gets along very well with Chloe.”
