She discovered a completely empty fridge and a $6,500 charge β but what her husband told her after a brutal beating shocked her to her core π¨π€―π±
Just a year ago, Mariana and Alex had been making plans, saving money, believing that after his business failure, everything would gradually get back on track. But the business closed, and his promise to “find a job by next week” stretched into 8 months.
The entire time, Mariana alone had been paying the rent, utilities, groceries, and all the other expenses. She would come home after exhausting shifts, while Alex was almost always on the couch, assuring her he was actively job hunting.
That evening, Mariana came home completely drained. She threw her bag on a chair, walked into the kitchen, and opened the fridge.
It was completely empty.
“Alex, where’s all the food?” she asked, trying to keep her voice calm.
Her husband didn’t even look up from his game right away.
“I gave it to my mom. They’re going through a hard time right now.”
“All of it?”
“Yeah. What’s the big deal? You’ll get paid tomorrow and buy more.”
Mariana stared at him silently for a few seconds, then opened her banking app. Her expression slowly changed.
“Then explain something else to me. What’s this charge for six thousand five hundred dollars?”
Alex fell silent for a minute.
“I spent it on groceries,” he finally answered.
“On groceries? Six and a half thousand dollars?”
“Everything’s gotten so expensive these days β food, alcohol. I just wanted to help my family.”
“With my money? And you don’t want to help our family?”
“Don’t start, Mariana. You’ve got money anyway. Don’t be so petty.”
That was the moment her patience snapped. She didn’t shout or make a scene. Mariana simply blocked the additional card, changed the Wi-Fi password, and decided she was no longer going to support a thirty-year-old unemployed man who didn’t respect her work.
Several days passed this way. The whole time, they kept fighting, because Alex refused to accept his actual situation and still believed Mariana was obligated to provide for him.
On the third day, coming home after another shift, Mariana saw a horrifying scene and couldn’t believe her eyes.
Alex was lying on the living room floor. His face was bruised, his clothes dirty, and the whole apartment looked like a violent fight had taken place there.
“Alex! What happened? Who did this?!”
He struggled to lift his head and looked at her.
“It doesn’t matter. You don’t need to know.”
“I’m calling the police.”
“No!” For the first time ever, he shouted. “You can’t call the police. Don’t you dare get involved!”
Mariana froze, then, no longer hiding her anger, raised her voice:
“Then tell me what’s going on!”
After her outburst, Alex finally came to his senses and revealed the truth. What he told her that evening changed everything and shook Mariana to her core. She could never have imagined her husband was capable of something like this. π¨

Alex was silent for a long time, and then finally told Mariana what he had been hiding all these months.
It turned out that after the business failed, he hadn’t just been job hunting. He had gotten in touch with people who offered him the chance to invest money in several dubious investment schemes. Alex had believed the promises of big profits, and wanting to quickly get his old life back, he had taken out an enormous loan from criminal figures.
“How much do you owe them?” Mariana asked quietly.
Alex lowered his eyes.
“Several million dollars.”
Mariana went pale.
It turned out he had lost all the money, and when the lenders demanded repayment, Alex started asking for extensions. A few days earlier, they had come to the apartment and beaten him, warning him there wouldn’t be another warning.
“So that’s why you spent my money?” Mariana asked furiously.
“I was trying to work it out⦔
“You weren’t working anything out! You dragged both of us into this!”
Mariana was so angry she wanted to simply pack her things and leave. But despite everything, she decided to help her husband one last time.
She called an old acquaintance of her father’s β a man respected in town, whom many preferred not to anger. Mariana told him the whole truth.
A few days later, the debt problem was resolved, and the lenders never showed up again.
What’s more, the man helped Alex get an ordinary job.
“I helped you only because you’re Mariana’s husband,” he said coldly. “But she won’t be answering for you a second time.”
Mariana looked at Alex and understood: saving him from the consequences was something she could do once. But saving their marriage after a betrayal like this β that was an entirely different story.
