Marisol had always known that her older brother Daniel had a way with words, especially when he needed to convince her to do something she really didn’t want to do.
So when, on her birthday, she received an envelope from him with a key card to a luxury hotel, her first reaction wasn’t delight but worry.
“Are you serious?” Marisol looked at him with distrust. “Daniel, do you even understand how much this costs?”
“Today’s your birthday,” her brother replied calmly. “And I want you not to think about anything for a few days.”
“And I shouldn’t think about your debts either?”
Daniel fell silent, then came closer and put a hand on her shoulder.
“Listen to me. The room is already paid for. Everything’s included. You don’t need to spend a single dollar. Just go and rest.”
“I’ll feel awkward staying in a place like that, knowing you’re scraping by on everything yourself.”
“Then consider it my last piece of foolishness this month,” he laughed. “Just once, feel like real aristocracy.”
After a long argument, Marisol finally agreed.
Two days later, she walked into the hotel, received her room key, and went up to the top floor. Everything around her looked so expensive that she even felt uneasy: marble, gold details, huge windows overlooking the night city.
“Daniel has really lost his mind,” she muttered, slowly opening the door.
She walked in and put her bag on a chair. The room was silent. Marisol slowly walked through each room, opened all the cabinets, and carefully examined every corner of the luxurious suite. Nothing hinted at trouble β until she opened the bathroom door.
In the luxurious, foam-filled tub lay an unfamiliar man. He looked handsome, but at the same time slightly intimidating. He was sleeping so soundly that he didn’t even notice the door open.
Marisol stepped back.

She ran out into the hallway and looked at the key card. The number matched. Marisol went back inside, looked at the sleeping man, and didn’t know what to do. At that moment, the man slowly opened his eyes.
He looked straight at her and said quietly:
“Finally, my bride has arrivedβ¦ I thought I wouldn’t get to see it.”

Theodore explained that a few weeks earlier he had happened to see Marisol and recognized her instantly. Many years ago, after a car accident, she had ended up next to a severely injured stranger. She had called for help, stopped the bleeding with her own clothes, and hadn’t left until the doctors arrived. Marisol had long forgotten that incident, but that man had remembered her forever.
“You saved my life and didn’t even know who I was,” Theodore said quietly. “Now I know everything about you.”
Marisol felt a new fear.
“And my brother? What does he have to do with this?”
“Daniel has enormous debts to my people. I gave him a choice: pay back the money, or bring you here.”
“So this whole vacation was a trap?”
“No, of course not. I have no intention of harming you,” Theodore replied calmly. “You have absolutely no reason to be afraid of me.”
He took a small box out of his pocket and opened it.
“I wanted to meet you in person. And now I want to offer you not a deal, but marriage. Your brother’s debts will disappear if you agree.”
Marisol looked at the ring, then straight into the eyes of the man the whole city feared.
“And if I refuse?”
Theodore smiled for the first time.
“Then your brother will still be free. I just wanted you to know the truth and hear the proposal from me myself.”
Marisol silently looked at the ring, realizing that her life had just changed forever.
