Twenty-year-old Alex had always dreamed of becoming a blogger who could rack up millions of views in just a few hours. He constantly came up with new pranks for social media, but ordinary jokes barely brought him any views anymore. That day, an idea occurred to him that he considered “genius.”
His grandmother Margaret was sitting on the shore of a lake. She had come to spend the weekend with the family. Everyone knew Margaret couldn’t swim. Moreover, ever since an incident in her youth, she had a panicked fear of water.
Alex took out his phone and turned on the camera.
“Grandma, you’ve always said you’re afraid of water, right?” he asked with a smile.
Margaret looked at him warily.
“Alex, don’t even think about doing anything stupid.”
Alex moved closer.
“Relax, Grandma. This is a chance to test yourself and beat your fears. Besides, it’s just a video. Everyone will laugh, and in a couple of days you’ll be laughing about it too.”
“I told you, don’t come near me.”
But Alex was no longer listening. His parents didn’t even think to stop their son. Alex abruptly grabbed Margaret’s shoulder and shoved her toward the lake.
The woman fell into the water with a scream.
For a few seconds, her head disappeared beneath the surface, and then she began desperately trying to stay afloat. Alex kept filming while his parents laughed, as if what was happening was just an ordinary family joke.
“Come on, Grandma! Show us what you’ve learned!” Alex laughed.
He tried shouting instructions on how she should move, pretending to be teaching her to swim. But out of fear, the woman couldn’t even hear his voice. She tried to scream, “Help!” but, choking on water, she could no longer make herself heard properly.
She clawed at the shore with all her strength until she was finally able to grab onto a protruding root and pull herself onto land.
Margaret lay on the grass, breathing heavily and coughing. She couldn’t catch her breath or come to her senses after what had happened.
None of her children or grandchildren helped her. They all stood together watching the video Alex had filmed, laughing and commenting on it again and again, as if nothing terrible had happened.
Margaret slowly got up, wiped the water from her face, and looked at her family.
She said nothing. But there was something in her gaze that gradually made even the smile disappear from Alex’s face. Whether it was her cold stare or her firm resolve, they themselves couldn’t quite grasp what exactly had changed in their sweet grandmother, or why, within just a few seconds, she had become someone completely different.

“What’s going on here?” Alex asked, confused.
Margaret looked at him calmly.
“You wanted this day to change my life. You got what you wanted. But now yours is going to change too.”
The lawyer took out some documents.
“As of this moment, the villa you are currently standing in no longer belongs to you. It’s registered in Margaret’s name.”
Everyone froze.
Then the man stepped forward.
“And the house where you grew up, the one you considered your future inheritance, also belongs to her. And Margaret has already decided what to do with her assets.”
“Given them to whom?” Sofia whispered.
Margaret smiled for the first time.
“To my eldest son.”
Alex turned pale.
“You have a son?”
“Yes. And you’ve never heard of him.”
It turned out Margaret had been married twice. Her first husband had been a powerful figure in the criminal underworld. After their divorce, he had hidden the existence of their son for years, and had even concealed their marriage certificate to protect Margaret from people connected to his past.
But Margaret herself had never lost touch with her firstborn and had known where he was the entire time. After watching how her own family treated her, laughing without a shred of doubt while she fought for her life, Margaret made a decision no one had expected from her. She disinherited everyone who had calmly watched her risk dying, and passed her estate on to her eldest son.
