He had considered himself an ordinary man all his life, until at the city office he learned that according to official documents he had long since died together with his father. What was revealed later shocked everyone even more 😨🤯😱
At eighteen Liam packed his things into an old backpack and left the house where he had lived almost his whole life. His stepfather Victor stood at the door with his arms crossed and didn’t even try to hide his irritation.
— You’re not my own, Liam. It’s time you learned to live on your own, — he said.
Liam waited for his mother to step in, but she only turned away to the kitchen window. That evening he left with a small amount of money and a promise to himself never to ask Victor for help.
For fifteen years Liam worked wherever he could. Longest of all at a sawmill in a small town. The work was hard, but it gave him a roof over his head and confidence that tomorrow he could buy food. Everything changed when the sawmill was closed. Soon Liam fell from a loading platform and injured his shoulder. The doctor forbade him to lift heavy things, and his savings lasted only a few weeks.
So at thirty-two Liam went to the city office to apply for health insurance. The woman at the counter checked his documents, frowned and entered the number into the computer again.
— There’s some mistake here, — she said. — Your social security number is flagged in an international database.
— What does that mean? — Liam asked. — Is it some kind of problem?
The woman lowered her voice:
— The documents say you died in 1995. Together with your father. In a car accident.
Liam shook his head. He remembered his father alive, remembered his voice and the old blue car. His father had died in 1997, when Liam was six years old.
— That’s impossible. I was six when my father died…
The woman called the head of the office, Marcus. He came over with a tired expression, but, glancing at the screen, he immediately stopped smiling. He asked Liam to repeat his date of birth, then looked at him intently.
— Close access to the file, — Marcus ordered the employee. — Don’t call anyone and don’t send anything without my permission.
— Could you explain what’s going on? — Liam asked.
The head didn’t answer. He turned pale and looked into Liam’s eyes for a long time, as if trying to recognize him. What he did next shocked everyone.😱

Marcus asked the employee to take Liam to the next office and stepped out into the corridor. There he took out his phone and dialed a number he hadn’t dared to dial for many years.
— Van, I think your brother’s son is alive. You need to come, — he said.
On the other end there was a long silence.
The man who died was named Alexander Reed. He was a well-known and very wealthy businessman. In 1995 his car was in an accident. Alexander was found in the car, but his little son was not. The search went on for several days, but the child was never found. Later he was declared dead together with his father.
Marcus knew Alexander and his older brother Van. When he saw Liam, the resemblance seemed too strong to be a coincidence.
Van arrived a few hours later. He looked at Liam, not daring to approach, and then said quietly:
— My brother had the same eyes.
The DNA test confirmed the relationship. Van hugged the nephew he had considered dead for almost thirty years.
But the joy quickly gave way to anger. In the old documents they found traces of forgery: after the accident someone had registered the child as dead, although his body had never been found. Van suspected that this had been done by people who benefited from hiding the heir and appropriating his share of the family fortune.
Liam didn’t immediately move in with his uncle and give up his usual life. He agreed to only one thing: to find out together who had forged the documents and why he had been made to live his whole life under someone else’s secret. Now he had a family and a name, but the answers still had to be earned.
