Since childhood, Meredith had gotten used to being the outsider in her own family. While her younger sister Emily was praised for every decision she made, Meredith always found a way to disappoint her parents. She’d left her hometown right after university and hadn’t shown up at a single family event in almost three years. During that time, she never once told her family what she actually did for work or why she’d suddenly stopped needing their help.
She came to Emily’s wedding alone.
When Meredith walked into the hall, her father was already standing among the guests with a glass of champagne. Seeing his daughter, he smirked.
“You actually came? I thought you’d be too embarrassed to show up here without a man.”
A few people smiled awkwardly. Meredith calmly took off her coat.
“I came to congratulate Emily. I don’t think my marital status is anyone’s business.”
“Of course it’s everyone’s business,” her father said loudly. “Look at her. Twenty-eight years old, and she still hasn’t managed to find a man.”
Meredith felt the hall go quiet. She looked at her father but didn’t argue.
“Dad, stop it,” Emily said quietly.
“I’m just telling the truth. A woman shouldn’t show up somewhere like this without a man. You’re a disgrace to this family. You’d have been better off not coming at all.”
He stepped closer, still smiling at the guests, as though what was happening were some amusing part of the wedding program. Then his hand shoved Meredith’s shoulder hard.
She lost her balance and, a second later, landed in the fountain in the middle of the garden.
A shocked murmur rippled through the hall. Meredith slowly rose out of the water, her wet hair plastered to her face, while the well-dressed guests stared at her, not knowing where to look.
Her father just shrugged.
“A woman should always know her place. And if she doesn’t, it’s a man’s job to explain it to her, by whatever means necessary.”
Meredith said nothing.
Twenty minutes later, she came back into the hall in a dry black dress. There wasn’t a trace of tears or embarrassment left on her face.
And that’s exactly when the doors swung open.
Several bodyguards in sharp suits walked into the hall. Behind them appeared a man everyone in the city knew. Sheikh Omar Al-Khalid — the richest man in the city and one of the most influential businessmen in the country.
He stopped in the middle of the hall and looked straight at Meredith.
“Forgive me for being late, Meredith.”
Her father frowned.
“You… know my daughter?”
Omar slowly turned to face him.

“You asked if I know your daughter? Of course. She’s my wife.”
Everyone around froze. Emily couldn’t believe her ears, and Meredith’s father went pale.
“But… she’s been alone for three years.”
“No,” Meredith answered. “I simply didn’t want you to know about my marriage.”
Omar took her hand.
“Three years ago, Meredith became my wife. But she made one condition: she wouldn’t use my money or my name. She wanted to build her career on her own.”
He looked at the guests.
“And she succeeded. Over these three years, Meredith built her own company and turned it into a successful business. Everything she has, she earned herself.”
Her father stared at his daughter, unable to find words.
“So this whole time, you were…”
“Working,” Meredith finished calmly. “While you thought I was a failure.”
Omar turned to her father.
“I never interfered with her choices. But I won’t let anyone humiliate my wife. Not even her own father.”
Silence fell over the hall once again.
Meredith looked at her father and said:
“Today you wanted to show everyone that I was worthless. But in the end, it was you who showed everyone exactly who you really are.”
She took Omar’s hand, and together they walked out of the hall.
For the first time in years, Meredith felt no need to prove anything to her family.
