She ran out of the restaurant the moment she saw the man waiting for her by the window, and hid in the first office she came across. There she found herself in front of a powerful mafia boss and begged him for help What he did shocked everyone. đ¤Żđąđł
Three years earlier, Emily had left the city almost without belongings. She had explained to no one why she was in such a hurry, and for a long time she didnât answer calls. She needed to start everything over, far from the man with whom she had once built a family.
Gradually the fear receded. Emily found a job, made friends and even decided to get to know a man online. His name was Mark. They messaged almost every day, talking about books, travel and the little things people donât usually tell strangers. Mark was attentive, but he wouldnât agree to video calls. He explained this by his complicated schedule, and Emily didnât insist.
Six months later he suggested meeting and going on a date to a restaurant.
â Iâm a little nervous, â Emily admitted, fixing her hair in front of the mirror.
â Thatâs normal, â her friend answered. â What matters is that you want this yourself.
Mark wrote to her that he was already waiting for her at the restaurant by the window. Going upstairs, Emily saw the only man by the window and at first didnât understand why it had become hard for her to breathe. He turned to her and smiled. Hearing the voice she had tried to forget all these years, and seeing his face for the first time in a long while, Emily froze and couldnât take a single step forward.
It was Daniel, her ex-husband.
â Youâve finally come back to me.
But Emily was already backing toward the exit. Daniel went after her, and then she dashed at a quick pace into the nearest corridor. Emily flung open the first door she came across and found herself in a spacious office. No one was at the desk, so she quickly crawled under it. At that moment Alexander Moretti walked in from the next room â a powerful man about whom people in the city spoke in whispers. He approached the desk and wanted to sit down, but noticed Emily and stopped.
â Please, help me, â she whispered. â He must not find me. Please!
Alexander looked at her intently, but didnât have time to ask a single question. The door burst open with a bang, and Daniel stormed into the office.
â Emily, stop hiding! Youâre my wife, and youâre obliged to come back with me!
Alexander looked at him, but said nothing.
Daniel shifted his gaze to Alexander and demanded:
â Where is she? Where is my wife? Give her back to me!
Alexander first looked at the girl under his desk, and then at the enraged man. And then he did, in his office, something that shocked everyone. đ¤Ż

Alexander didnât answer Daniel. He pressed a button on his phone, called security and calmly said:
â Step away from the door. The police are already on their way.
â This is a family matter! â Daniel protested. â Sheâs my wife!
Emily crawled out from under the desk and stood behind Alexanderâs back.
â Ex-wife. I left you three years ago because you followed me, checked my phone and made threats when I tried to leave.
Daniel smirked and reached a hand toward her, but guards came into the office. One of them asked him to step back. Daniel started shouting that Emily had agreed to the date herself and was now putting on a show.
Alexander looked at her phone, which had fallen out of her bag. The conversation with Mark was still open on the screen. He asked Emily to look at the profile photo. She turned pale: the picture was someone elseâs, but the messages contained details known only to Daniel. The man wouldnât agree to video calls because behind Markâs name all this time had been him.
While security held Daniel at the entrance, Alexander handed the police the restaurantâs camera recordings and the messages. In front of witnesses Daniel kept demanding that Emily come back, and by that only confirmed her words.
The police took him away for questioning. Emily thanked Alexander and for the first time in a long while felt that she could choose for herself where to go next. She did not return to her past life â and she no longer let anyone decide for her.
