“Are you hiding something from me?” she asked that morning before the ball.

“But you said we would be together!”

“I never promised you a divorce. You made up that story yourself.”
He turned to Evelyn.
“And now you know why I stayed silent. I wanted to fix everything first, and then ask you to decide whether you’d stay with me.”
Evelyn took off the tiara, looked at it, and put it back on.
“I won’t stay for your money. I’ll stay only for the person you decided to become.”
Applause broke out across the hall.
