After the divorce Elena decided to start over. Eleven days earlier she had signed the last papers and finally stopped waiting for Daniel to come back with another promise to fix everything.
The new house cost $327,500. Elena told no one about the purchase: first she wanted to finish the renovation, move her things, and only then tell her loved ones where she lived now. She had even chosen the code for the electronic lock so that it would be impossible to guess.
That evening she was checking the security cameras when a familiar car stopped at the entrance. Daniel got out first, and behind him appeared Sophia — his new wife. Elena froze in front of the screen.
— What are they doing at my house? — she whispered.
Daniel didn’t even look around. He typed in the code, the lock clicked, and the door opened.
Elena felt her hands go cold. She had never given him keys and had never told him the code. The footage showed Daniel calmly walking inside, as if returning to his own place.
— How could he have found out? — she asked herself.
Her first impulse was to call the police. But Elena stopped herself: until she understood how her ex-husband had gotten into the house, she needed answers. She checked the recordings from the past few days and noticed that Daniel hadn’t come alone. He had been bringing different women here while Elena wasn’t around.
The next evening she left the lights off and waited in the next room. She didn’t intend to make a scene at the first opportunity; she needed to understand who else knew about the house and why Daniel kept coming back.
By half past nine headlights appeared at the gate again. Daniel arrived with another woman. He entered the code, opened the door and let her go in first.
Elena stepped out of the shadows.
— Did you really think you could keep coming here? — she asked.
Daniel turned around and tried to smile, but the smile vanished when he saw her face.
— Elena, listen…
She stepped toward him and hit him. Daniel recoiled, clutching his nose, and the stranger cried out and backed toward the door.
— You broke his nose! — she shouted.
— It’s not enough for him! — Elena answered.

Elena stepped toward Daniel, but stopped when she saw him pressing his palm to his face. Her anger was still boiling inside her, but she understood: if she went on, she herself would end up in the wrong.
— Tell me how you found out about the house and the code, — she demanded. — I’ve already called the police. The cameras recorded every one of your appearances.
Daniel glanced at the stranger. She stepped away from the door and took out her phone, as if she were about to film what was happening.
— You won’t believe me anyway, — he muttered.
— Then you’ll explain it to the police.
Elena pointed to the camera in the corner. Daniel turned pale. For a few seconds he was silent, then he confessed: Elena’s lawyer, Mr. Harris, had told him about the purchase of the house. He had received money and passed Daniel the details of the deal. And the code Daniel had learned through the contractor who installed the lock: the lawyer had asked him to send the access setup documents to Daniel’s email, passing him off as the person in charge of the house.
— He said I had the right to know where you live, — Daniel added. — And that you wouldn’t make a fuss anyway.
At that moment a police car stopped at the gate. Elena had called them as soon as she saw Daniel on the cameras. She had saved the recordings and handed them to the officers together with the correspondence that Daniel hadn’t managed to delete from his phone.
The next morning Elena called her friend Mia — a lawyer she had trusted for many years. Mia helped her file a complaint and get Harris’s actions investigated. It turned out that he had not only disclosed his client’s personal information but also received payment from Daniel for his help. After that the lawyer lost his license, and an investigation was opened against him.
Daniel, too, could not get away with apologies. The recordings confirmed that he had repeatedly entered the house without permission. The court ordered him to pay Elena compensation and forbade him to approach her and her home. Sophia, learning that Daniel had used her for his visits, filed for divorce.
A few months later Elena changed the lock and finally moved the last boxes into the house. Mia helped her arrange the documents so that the address would never again fall into the wrong hands.
Elena did not get back the peaceful months that had been taken from her. But she regained the right to decide who crosses her threshold.
