When my daughter-in-law, sitting at the table, threw a plate in my face and called me a burden, I was shocked… But what my son did to her a few seconds later shocked even me.
After my wife’s funeral, the house became empty.
In every corner I could still hear her voice. In the kitchen, her favorite towel was still hanging, and on the armchair by the window, the scarf she had knitted remained until the very last day.
One evening I was sitting alone and realized — I could no longer live there.
I sold our house and moved in with my son, hoping to spend my final years close to my family. I thought my grandchildren’s laughter would replace the silence, and that old age beside my son would feel like my wife’s final wish.
At first, everything seemed calm.
I even insisted on paying all the household bills myself: electricity, water, food, even repair costs. I spent my pension and the money I had saved for years without a single complaint.
But my daughter-in-law… she never saw me as a family member. In her eyes, I was a burden.
If I talked to the children for too long — she got irritated.
If I went into the kitchen — her face would immediately change.
If I watched TV in the living room — she would sigh loudly on purpose.
One day she could no longer hold back.
— If you live here, you must work, — she snapped. — I’m tired of taking care of you.
At her words, I froze. At that moment, my grandchildren were sitting silently at the table watching us. Out of shame, I lowered my eyes.
From that day on, I started doing all the heavy work around the house. Mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, even with a painful back I washed the stairs — just to avoid conflict in the family.
But the more I stayed silent, the harsher she became.😨😨
And then came the day that changed everything.
We were sitting at the dining table. The grandchildren were laughing, my son was quietly eating after a long workday, and I was just trying not to be in anyone’s way.
Suddenly my daughter-in-law looked at me and said in a cold voice:
— You can’t even cut bread properly. Because of you I have to redo everything.
I replied softly:
— I’m sorry… I’ll be more careful next time.
But that only made her angrier. She suddenly stood up and threw a plate at me with all her strength.
Soup and food spilled over my face and shirt.
The grandchildren screamed. And I… just stayed seated.
At that moment, my son slowly stood up from his seat, and what he did next shocked even me.

My daughter-in-law froze in shock.
— You… are you throwing me out?
— No, — my son replied. — I am protecting my father.
That night he sent his wife to her mother’s house.
But it didn’t end there.
The next day, my son sat the children down at the table and said:
— Never let anyone humiliate your parents. If I had stayed silent today, tomorrow you would have thought it was normal.
A few weeks later, my daughter-in-law returned.
But she already seemed like a different person.
She came up to me quietly, knelt down with tears in her eyes and said:
— Please forgive me… After my mother’s death, I closed my heart to everyone. But that did not give me the right to hurt you.
I looked at her for a long time.
Then I remembered my wife’s words:
“Destroying a family is easy… keeping it together is hard.”
I forgave her.
Now, every evening, we sit together at the same table again. The grandchildren laugh, my son is calm, and my daughter-in-law always places the first cup of tea in front of me.
Sometimes I look out the window and think…
Maybe I sold my old house, but in the end, I found my family again.
