She thought her son was helping her cope with hardship, until one day she found herself in a nursing home — what she did after that shocked everyone
Eleanor always tried not to be a burden to her son Daniel. After her husband’s death, she lived alone for many years in the small house they had once bought together, and she was used to solving her own problems. In recent months Eleanor’s health had gotten worse, so Daniel increasingly said that now it was he who should take care of his mother.
One morning he arrived together with his wife Claire and said they wanted to take Eleanor out to lunch. The woman suspected nothing bad and calmly got ready, taking her medications with her.
But instead of a restaurant, they brought her to a private nursing home.
Daniel left her suitcase, a bag of clothes, and her medications at the entrance, then got in the car with Claire and drove away. Eleanor watched the car for several minutes, not understanding why her son hadn’t even said goodbye.
“They’ll be back soon,” she told the staff member who approached her.
But Daniel’s phone was already switched off.

The young man first thought there had been some misunderstanding. His parents had assured him that his grandmother would be better off under specialists’ care, so he didn’t believe her words right away.

A few hours later Ethan drove nearly 190 miles and picked up his grandmother. They pulled onto the highway in silence, and only then did Eleanor begin to tell him what had really happened.
Six weeks earlier, Daniel had convinced her to sign a temporary power of attorney. He explained that the document was necessary to pay for treatment, medication, and other expenses. Eleanor trusted her son and didn’t suspect any trick.
But later she checked her bank statements.
Over six weeks, $55,000 had disappeared from her account.
“Are you sure it was Dad who did this?” Ethan asked.
Eleanor sighed heavily.
“I don’t know what he spent the money on. But after that he decided to get rid of me. He kept trying to send me to a nursing home, but I refused. And now look what he’s done to me.”
Ethan still tried to find an excuse for his father, suggesting the money might have gone toward his grandmother’s treatment and care.
Then Eleanor took an old envelope out of her bag.
“That’s why I asked you to take me to the courthouse. There you’ll find out why your father needed my power of attorney.”
Ethan looked at the envelope and felt anxiety building inside him.
