When seven-year-old Mia died of cancer, Daniel’s house fell silent in a way it never had before, so silent that he began to fear even his own breathing. Just a month earlier, children’s laughter had filled these rooms, small feet had run up and down the stairs, and his daughter’s drawings had hung on the fridge. Now all that remained were her belongings, the scent of her favorite shampoo, and a plush giraffe that Mia had barely let out of her hands for almost three years.
The day after the funeral, Daniel sat in her room, sorting through her toys. He wanted to pack them into boxes, but each time he stopped, remembering the way his daughter used to talk.
