The Walker family was once considered one of the most reliable in town. Their warehouse ran around the clock, their accounts grew, and Richard Walker never missed a chance to boast that he’d built it all himself. But over a few months, money began disappearing, suppliers stopped shipping goods, and debts climbed to five million dollars. Now the old warehouse seemed as empty as its owner’s promises.
Gabriel Vale arrived there in the evening. Behind him stood two assistants, and at the gate waited trucks the Walker family could no longer afford to pay for. Gabriel didn’t like threats and never raised his voice without reason, but people knew: if he gave you a deadline, there would be no second chance.
“Five million. I’m waiting for explanations, not more promises,” he said, placing a folder of documents on the table.
Richard hastily pointed at his daughter.
“Claire managed the accounts. She must know where it all went. Take her as collateral, if that helps us buy a week.”
Claire stood by the wall, gripping the edge of her sleeve. She wasn’t looking at Gabriel. Her eyes followed her father and her older brother Mark, as if she expected the blow to come from them.
Mark smirked and stepped toward his sister.
“Stop playing the victim. You signed the papers, so you’ll answer for it.”
“I signed what you gave me. You told me they were ordinary transfers,” Claire replied.
Richard struck his daughter and silenced her with a sharp slap.
“Shut up. Because of you we lost everything.”
Gabriel noticed the fear in Claire’s eyes. She wasn’t afraid of him, or of the cold look he used to size up the situation. She was afraid of the family that had just put her in front of an enemy to save themselves.
“Fine,” Gabriel said. “Claire comes with me. You have a week to return the money and prove you’re not to blame. If nothing changes in seven days, I’ll take the warehouse and whatever’s left, and I’ll pass judgment on your daughter myself. If, of course, she’s the one at fault.”
“You heard him?” Mark snapped at his sister. “Don’t even think about making a scene.”
Claire said nothing. But as Gabriel’s assistants led her out of the warehouse, she turned back and saw her father already whispering with Mark, not even glancing after her.
In the car, Gabriel sat across from her.
“If you know where the money is, now’s the time to say.”
Claire was silent for a long while. She didn’t know what to do. With bitterness in her heart, she sat trying to make sense of everything that had just happened. Gabriel looked at her more closely.
“Do you know who the company is registered to?”
“Mark. But my father arranged all of it. They wanted to pin the missing money on me while they planned to leave.”
At that moment, voices sounded from the warehouse. Mark burst into the office and grabbed Claire by the arm.
“You’ve said too much,” he hissed.
Gabriel stepped between them and shoved Mark back.
“Touch her again and you’ll regret it.”
Richard appeared in the doorway with a travel bag. Seeing that Claire had already told everything, he threw the bag to the floor and tried to leave through the back door. Mark rushed after him, but Gabriel’s assistants blocked the way.
“You were supposed to pay off the debt,” Gabriel said. “Instead, you decided to run and leave your daughter to answer for your crimes.”
He took the bag from Richard and handed it to an assistant. Inside were passports, cash, and documents for the shell company’s accounts. That was enough to confirm Claire’s words.
Gabriel didn’t take matters into his own hands. He called the police and handed over the documents and transfer records. Richard and Mark had to answer for fraud and for trying to frame Claire. The money was returned to the creditors, and the debt to Gabriel was settled by agreement.
