After the wedding, her husband’s family turned Olivia into an unpaid maid, but one unexpected phone call shocked everyone. š±š³šØ
Just a few hours before the wedding, Olivia was certain she was finally leaving a hard past behind her. After the death of her parents, she had spent a long time learning to live without their support, worked hard, and believed that beside Kevin she could build a happy family. He always found the right words, promised to take care of her, and assured her that his family would accept her as their own daughter. That’s exactly why, on her wedding day, Olivia couldn’t have imagined that the real nightmare would begin the moment the door of Kevin’s family home closed behind them.
The moment the last guests left the house, Linda stopped smiling and gave her new daughter-in-law a cold, appraising look.
“Now listen to me carefully. From today on, you cook, do laundry, clean, and serve our whole family. There are six of us, so you’ll have plenty of work. In addition, every month you’ll hand over part of your salary to the family budget. These rules have existed in our house for many years.”
Olivia looked at her husband, bewildered.
“Kevin⦠Is this some kind of joke?”
He shrugged with complete calm.
“No. All the women in our family live this way. Now you’re part of this family too, so you’re obligated to follow our rules.”
Olivia slowly shook her head.
“I married you, not your whole family. I’m not going to become an unpaid maid, and I’m not giving anyone the money I earn through my own work.”
A heavy silence instantly fell over the room.
George, Kevin’s father, abruptly rose from his seat and walked up almost right against her.
“Seems like you still haven’t understood where you’ve ended up.”
“On the contrary, now I understand perfectly,” Olivia answered firmly, not looking away. “But no one has the right to treat me like a servant, or like an object.”
The next instant, a hard slap threw her against the wall. Her cheek burned with pain, and she tasted the metallic tang of blood in her mouth. Through her tears, she looked at Kevin, hoping he would at least now stop his father.
But her husband didn’t take a single step.
“If you don’t learn to obey, it’ll only get worse from here,” he said indifferently.
At that moment the fear inside Olivia vanished, replaced by fury. She grabbed a heavy metal rod standing by the wall. Seeing this, George lunged toward her, but Olivia didn’t hesitate and struck the large glass table with the rod as hard as she could. A deafening crack echoed through the house, and thousands of sharp shards scattered across the floor.
“One more step toward me, and the next hit won’t land on the furniture!” she shouted, gripping the metal rod tightly with both hands.
George froze involuntarily, and the rest of the family stepped back in fear. Those few seconds were enough. Olivia ran out of the house, locked herself in the car, and with trembling hands dialed the only number she could remember.
“Mr. William Brooks⦠I’m sorry to be calling after all these years. I have no one else to turn to⦔
For a few seconds there was complete silence on the line. Then a calm, but very firm voice answered.
“Olivia, my girl, what happened?.. No, that doesn’t matter right now. Stay right where you are. I’m on my way.”
The man’s words sounded so calm and confident that Olivia hadn’t even hung up before she burst into tears right there. For the first time in a long while, she felt she was no longer facing her trouble alone.
A few minutes later, two cars pulled up outside the house, one after the other. From the first stepped Mr. William Brooks and his son George Brooks [note: text says “Daniel” below ā see translator note]. From the second, two well-known detectives stepped out calmly.
While Daniel helped Olivia into the car and drove her to a safe place, Mr. William Brooks headed to the house with the detectives to deal personally with what had happened.
But none of Kevin’s family could have imagined why they had really come. What Mr. Brooks and the detectives did in the next few minutes left Kevin and his entire family in absolute shock. š±

As soon as the door opened, George looked at the visitors with a smirk.
“Come to collect your crybaby? Take her. We don’t need a daughter-in-law like that.”
But Mr. William didn’t even glance at him.
“Detectives, you may begin.”
One of them immediately switched on his body camera.
“George Miller, you are being charged with intentional battery, threats, attempted coercion to surrender funds, and domestic violence. Please do not interfere with the investigation.”
The smile instantly vanished from George’s face.
“This must be some mistake!”
“No,” Mr. Brooks replied calmly. “While you were shouting and threatening Olivia, every word you said, along with the moment of the blow, was recorded. In addition, the neighbors’ security cameras captured her running out with a bloodied face, and a medical examination will confirm her injuries.”
Kevin turned pale.
“But why⦠why are you even getting involved?”
Mr. Brooks looked him directly in the eye for the first time.
“Because many years ago, when your parents were just starting their business and were on the verge of bankruptcy, it was Olivia’s parents who helped them save the company. After their tragic death, I promised that if their daughter ever found herself in trouble, I would protect her as if she were my own.”
Complete silence fell over the house.
A few minutes later, George was led out in handcuffs, while Linda and Kevin were left to silently watch as everything they had believed was their impunity came crashing down.
