When Chloe married Ethan, she knew his mother would never accept her as one of their own. Margaret came from a wealthy family and didn’t hide the fact that she considered her son’s wife unworthy of their name.
For almost two years, Chloe endured constant mockery. Margaret would find fault with her clothes, set up a separate table for “important guests,” and then loudly announce that some people simply couldn’t buy good manners.
— Don’t pay attention, that’s just how Mom is, — Ethan kept repeating. — Better to just stay quiet, and it’ll pass.
But nothing ever passed. Every month, the humiliation only grew more painful.
That evening, the whole family gathered at Margaret’s luxurious mansion. She was celebrating her birthday and had invited relatives, business partners, and friends. — Are you seriously bringing that into my house?
Without waiting for an answer, she picked up the dish, walked over to the enormous dog standing near the guests, and dumped the entire chicken straight into its bowl.
— That’s exactly where food like that belongs. For people, I serve something quite different.
Silence fell over the hall. A few guests exchanged bewildered glances, but no one said a word. Walter slowly lowered his eyes, as if trying to hide his pain and humiliation.
At that moment, something inside Chloe snapped.
All this time she had stayed silent while they mocked her. She had endured the jabs, the sneers, the condescending looks. But watching her father be humiliated — a man who had worked honestly his whole life and never done anyone wrong — that, she wasn’t willing to bear any longer.
She walked slowly to the pantry, opened the heavy metal door, and a few seconds later returned holding a massive sledgehammer.
Margaret laughed loudly.
— And what exactly are you going to do? Scare me?
Chloe said nothing. She calmly walked over to the glass display case where Margaret had, for many years, kept her most prized possession — an extremely rare collector’s vase worth nearly two million dollars.
Margaret went sharply pale.
— Chloe… You wouldn’t dare… Don’t even think about it…

— All the property transfer documents were done legally. Ethan personally signed the powers of attorney and the paperwork, without even reading them. He was too sure I’d never dare to use them.
Ethan snatched the documents with trembling hands, quickly flipped through a few pages, and looked at his wife in bewilderment.
— This can’t be true…
— It is, — Chloe said quietly. — The house, the shares, several properties, and the bank assets already belong to me. Everything’s registered. Check as much as you like.
A heavy silence fell over the room.
