Six years ago, Emma Walker walked into the kitchen of a small rented space with one old oven, two pots, and an almost empty bank account. She didn’t have wealthy parents or influential connections. She simply knew how to cook and was willing to work into the night. Gradually, her small venture grew into a successful catering company that already employed dozens of people.
Emma never forgot how much effort it had taken her to get there. So when her father called her one evening and said her younger sister was in trouble, she immediately sensed the conversation would be unpleasant.
“Emma, you need to come home. We need to have a serious talk about Mia.”
“What happened?”
“It’s very important, and there’s no point discussing it over the phone. Come home.”
“I don’t have time right now, I have too much going on. Just tell me straight.”
“Your sister has a debt of almost 2 million dollars.”
Emma was silent for a few seconds, trying to process what she’d heard.
“2 million? How is that even possible?”

“We only have one option. You have to sell your company,” he said calmly.
Emma didn’t even immediately grasp the meaning of those words.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“You heard me. Sell the business, pay off the money, and the problem will be solved.”
“You want me to destroy six years of my life over Mia’s debt? Do you realize this won’t be a lesson for her, that she’ll just get into trouble again, and my business will be gone for good?”
“You’re the eldest, and you’re supposed to help the family. This isn’t just your sister’s debt. It’s a family problem. That’s why you’re the one who has to solve it.”
Emma stood up sharply from the table.

Her father was furious.
