Natalie understood she had to run when she heard footsteps outside her door.
That very morning she had still considered this house her own. She had married Adrian a year and a half ago and had grown used to his family’s cold rules, but she never thought that one day her husband’s relatives would lock her in a room and demand she give up her own brother.
Sixteen-year-old Leo had gone missing two days earlier. Natalie knew where he was, but she stayed silent.
“Where is he?” Adrian’s brother demanded harshly as he burst into the room. “You understand perfectly well that we’ll find him ourselves if you don’t tell us.”
“I’m not going to tell you anything. He hasn’t done anything to you.”
“That’s not for you to decide. Last time I’m asking: where is Leo?”
Natalie backed toward the window, but saw two security men below. That’s when she realized that if she stayed, she wouldn’t be able to get out.
She waited for a moment when the hallway went quiet, opened the service door, and ran out through the staff exit. Natalie lost her phone on the stairs, tore her dress on a metal fence, but didn’t even stop.
A row of cars stood by the gates.
She threw open the first door she came to and literally collapsed onto the back seat.
“Please, drive! They’re coming after me!”
Inside the car was a man in white clothing and a black gold-trimmed bisht. It was Sheikh Karim Al-Hadi, who had recently taken up residence in a mansion next to Adrian’s family home. He had come to the country for a new business agreement, specifically with her husband’s family.
Karim calmly looked at the frightened girl, then saw the men running out of the gates.
“You’d better get out, ma’am,” the driver warned.
Karim didn’t even turn his head.
“Drive.”
The car pulled away.
A few minutes later, Natalie finally managed to catch her breath.
“Thank you, sir. If you’re heading into the city, I’ll get out wherever you’d like, just not here, please.”
“Then I require an explanation.”
She looked at Karim and, for the first time, wondered whether she could trust him.
“My husband’s family is looking for my brother.”
“Why?”
Natalie looked away.
“Forgive me, sir, but that’s too personal a matter, and I don’t want to put you in any more danger.”
Karim frowned.
“Well, you’ve already done that. But I agreed to it myself, by ordering the driver to keep going.”
For a few seconds she stayed silent, but then the man’s phone rang. It was Natalie’s husband. He tried to convince Karim that Natalie had serious mental problems and that she was simply crazy, so her words couldn’t be trusted. According to him, the best thing would be to bring her back.
Karim didn’t know who to believe. Just as he was about to order the driver to turn around, Natalie realized she had to do something urgently to keep her husband from winning.
She turned sharply to Karim and shouted a few words that shocked the sheikh so much that he immediately changed his decision and ordered the driver to keep going. 😳

Karim immediately set the phone aside and looked closely at the girl. Now he understood why she had tried so desperately to escape.
“Tell me everything. From the beginning.”
Natalie could barely hold back her tears.
“After my father’s death, his entire fortune was supposed to pass to Leo. But he’s only sixteen, so until he comes of age, the property has to be managed by a trustee named in the will. But there was another clause: if anything happens to Leo, the right to the inheritance passes entirely to me.”
It was right after that, according to Natalie, that Adrian’s family changed.
At first they tried to find out where Leo was, then they started secretly watching him. Natalie accidentally overheard a conversation and realized it wasn’t about money at all, but about a plan to eliminate her brother, so that after his death they could gain access to her father’s fortune through her.
“I was afraid to go to the police, because I didn’t know who I could trust. And today they locked me up and demanded I tell them where Leo is.”
Karim listened to her in silence until the end.
